Welcome to A Modern Maker’s Studio!
This blog entry coincides with the launch of my debut collection for Spoonflower, “Rustic Geometry”—an exciting milestone for a new surface designer! Creating this collection was both a thrilling and challenging journey, and I’m excited to share the inspiration and process behind it.
I began by researching 2025’s interior design trends, where color serves as the foundation for any great design. Every year, major paint brands unveil their “Color of the Year,” and while their picks may vary, 2025’s palette is unified by bold jewel tones with cool, neutral undertones.
For my collection, I focused on colors from brands available at Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Ace Hardware:
- Glidden’s Purple Basil: a deep, moody plum.
- Behr’s Rumors: a rich ruby with mauve undertones.
- Benjamin Moore’s Cinnamon Slate: a warm terra cotta with a cool, neutral base.
- Valspar’s Encore: a striking jewel-toned teal.
- Sherwin-Williams’ Rain Cloud: a serene gray-blue.
- Sherwin-Williams’ Kingdom Gold (2025’s “ugliest” color of the year): A radiant golden hue I couldn’t help but love!
These colors evoke a sense of moody comfort, perfect for the bold maximalist interiors trending now. Instead of a simple accent wall, imagine drenching entire rooms in these rich hues, complemented by wallpaper that adds depth and character.
Next, I explored design trends for 2025, focusing on Geometric, Tribal, and Wabi-Sabi aesthetics. While the first two are familiar, Wabi-Sabi embraces imperfection and the beauty of natural, raw forms. It’s rooted in the philosophy that imperfection is a natural and beautiful part of life.
I wanted to create a pattern that reflected the intersection of these three aesthetics—linear designs accented with triangles and dots. As I mapped out my design, I found myself remeasuring and adjusting repeatedly, only to realize the beauty lay in its imperfection. Since I hand-paint my patterns, I’m mindful to make them polished yet authentic, avoiding the perception that handcrafted means messy.
Each color I used added its unique character to the designs in the Rustic Geometry Collection. I hand-mixed watercolor paints to create the patterns, which offer a softer, more transparent look compared to the opacity of interior paints. This contrast in textures is stunning when paired with bold color-drenched walls. Imagine solid-colored wainscoting on the bottom half of a wall and matching wallpaper on the top half—it’s a striking blend of modern and classic styles.
If bold isn’t your style, this design can also complement minimalist spaces. A throw pillow or blanket featuring one of these patterns can add just the right pop of color to Scandinavian-inspired décor.
That’s all for now! Let me know what you think about Rustic Geometry in the comments or share how you used these designs—I’d love to see your creations. These are artfully crafted designs, made to inspire, and I can’t wait to connect with you through them. https://www.spoonflower.com/profiles/shaysweattdesigns
